Wood fibre from the forests are used as feedstock in the bio-energy facilities which includes lower value material from harvesting operations such treetops and residual materials from mills such as saw dust and barks. It is a low-carbon energy solution that supports jobs in rural communities and keeps forests healthy by protecting them from insects, diseases and wildfire encouraging sustaible forestry. The benfits of using wood for bio-energy is that it is abundant in nature, renewable and helps in capturing carbon emissions as compared to fossil fuels. The process of converting wood chips to energy is called biomass gasification. Here the wood chips are heated in low oxygen environment which produces a gas mixture called syngas which can be used for producing electricity or a as a fuel source.
