Government of India's Global Commitments
India is at the cusp of two significant transformations. The first is its demographic transformation – India will be the most populous country in the world, home to one of the youngest populations. A rapid and equitable economic growth is critical to meet the aspirations of 1.4 billion people. The second is its green transformation – India has a unique opportunity to leapfrog through low/no emissions technologies.
Sustainable Development Goal
The 17 Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were adopted by 193 nations in September 2015 at the UN Summit. India has played an important role in shaping the SDGs and is committed to achieving them.
India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)
India's NDCs identify the actions the national government intends to take under the UNFCCC climate deal agreed in Paris in December 2015. The 2015 NDC comprised eight goals, three with quantitative targets to be achieved by 2030.
Updated NDC – Panchamrit (COP26)
At COP26 in Glasgow, the Prime Minister of India announced the five nectar elements or Panchamrit. India also announced the fifth target: to become net-zero by 2070. The updated NDC promotes "LIFE" – Lifestyle for Environment as a key to combating climate change.
Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy
India submitted its Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy to the UNFCCC during COP27 (Sharm-el-Sheikh, November 2022). The strategy focuses on rational utilization of national resources with regard to energy security, with transitions from fossil fuels in a just, smooth, sustainable and inclusive manner.
Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative (IDDI)
The Clean Energy Ministerial IDDI is a global coalition of public and private organisations working to stimulate demand for low-carbon industrial materials. Coordinated by UNIDO, co-led by UK and India, with Canada, Germany and UAE as members. IDDI expects to encourage a minimum of ten governments to make public procurement commitments for low-carbon steel and cement.
Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT)
LeadIT brings together countries and companies committed to action under the Paris Agreement. Launched by Sweden and India at the UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019 and supported by the World Economic Forum. LeadIT fosters collaboration between public and private policymakers to enable the needed policy environment, finance flows, and exchange of best practices.
